About
An independent house with one standard across every shelf.
We publish puzzles, activity books, picture books, nonfiction, reference and fiction. The subjects vary enormously. The care does not.
What we publish
Levine House Press works across six categories through three imprints. Lantern & Grid makes puzzle and logic books. Little Levine makes picture books and activity books for young readers. The Levine House imprint publishes nonfiction, reference and fiction for general readers.
The list looks broad because it is. What holds it together is a way of working: an editor who reads every line, a designer who sets the interior before the cover, and a production decision made on how the book will actually be used rather than what it costs to make.
How we work
Every title is edited in three passes — structural, line, and a cold read by someone who has not seen the manuscript. Puzzle books get a fourth: every grid is solved from scratch by a second constructor before it goes to press.
We choose paper for the task. Activity and coloring titles print single-sided on uncoated stock so markers do not ghost. Reference titles are sewn so they lie flat on a desk. Puzzle books are bound to open without a fight.
What we look for
We consider work that has a clear reader in mind and a reason to exist as a physical book. We are especially interested in reference and activity projects with a distinct point of view, and in picture books where the pictures are doing real narrative work.
